2004 Triple Crown Season Highlights.

Birdstone wins 136th Belmont Stakes

Birdstone carries jockey Edgar Prado past tiring Smarty Jones in the last 70 yards of the 136th Belmont Stakes held on June 5, 2004 at Belmont Park in New York. Smarty Jones suffered the first defeat of his career and failed to become horse racing's 12th Triple Crown Champion.

BIRDSTONE was unhurried while between horses on the first turn, swung out entering the backstretch, settled in the middle of the pack while racing five wide along the backstretch, took up chase after the winner from outside on the far turn, moved around EDDINGTON while gaining ground midway on the turn, circled five wide while launching his bid at the top of the stretch, drifted out in upper stretch, straightened his course when struck right handed nearing the furlong marker, closed steadily under steady right hand encouragement a sixteenth out then wore down SMARTY JONES in the final seventy yards.

SMARTY JONES moved up from outside to contest the early pace, pressed the pace while four wide entering the backstretch, surged to the front just after going a half mile, battled heads apart while continuing wide to the far turn, shook off ROCK HARD TEN to get clear leaving the three-eighths pole, extended his lead approaching the quarter pole, drifted out when struck left handed with the whip in upper stretch and again nearing the eighth pole, maintained a clear lead inside the furlong marker, fought gamely into deep stretch then yielded grudgingly while weakening in the late stages.

Smarty Jones' Triple Crown Bid

Stewart Elliott and Smarty Jones - Kentucky Derby and Preakness winners, Belmont Stakes next - Thoroughbred Racing's next Triple Crown Champion.
He survived the murder of his very first trainer and a fractured skull at age two, later to emerge as an undisputed racing champion. This is not Hollywood but the true account of one amazing horse who, a year after the release of the movie Seabiscuit, made real-life history in horse racing. This is the story of Smarty Jones. 136th Belmont Stakes

Smarty Jones is 2/3 of the way to becoming the 12th Triple Crown winner, but he won't have it easy at Belmont. As many as nine rivals have surfaced so far to try and stop him on June 5th at Belmont Park. Here is the latest list of probable starters for the Belmont, but expect it to change over the next two weeks, so keep checking back to see what's going on. Entries will be taken and post positions selected on June 2nd. Get our Belmont Stakes Special Handicapping Report for only $10 or continue to read about 136th Belmont Stakes Contenders.

Our regular horse racing tip sheets for the Preakness had Smarty Jones as the top pick in all aspects of the race, from speed and pace, to class and power which he demonstrated as he bulleted away from the threat of Rock Hard Ten. We had the $24.60 exacta with Rock Hard Ten but not the trifecta as Lion Heart faded into fourth passed by eventual third placer Eddington. Our special Preakness Report dismissed Rock Hard Ten in place of Eddington. We are in full swing with our Belmont Park coverage, the next step in Smarty Jones' bid is the Belmont Stakes on June 5 - see you there!

Stewart Elliott prods Smarty Jones past Lion Heart in the final stretch
of the 130th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. Smarty Jones stays undefeated in 7 starts.

Our regular horse racing tip sheet had Smarty Jones as the 2nd pick, a $10.60 winner! We also delivered the $65 Exacta with Lion Heart. Our $25 report produced the $987 Trifecta with Imperialism closing heavily as expected. Our longshot Pro Prado finished 13th in a field of 18. On to the 129th Preakness Stakes, the 2nd leg of the Triple Crown where Smarty will lead the field as a legitimate Triple Crown contender.

Ashado wins the Kentucky Oaks

Ashado (our 3rd pick) passed Madcap Escapade (our top pick) in the final furlong Friday and held off Island Sand (longshot) to win the $572,000 Kentucky Oaks. Ashado, ridden by John Velazquez, ran 1 1-8 miles Friday on the muddy track in 1:50.81, and paid $6.60, $4.20 and $3. She earned $354,640 for owner Starlight Stables. The OAKS field dropped to 11 when Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Halfbridled was scratched Friday orning with muscle cramps. Ashado avenged a loss to Mad Escapade last April 3 at Keeneland's 1 1-16-mile Ashland Stakes.
